This is insane. So, I’ve been using Aperture 2 ever since I started shooting in RAW with my XTi. On that camera it worked fine, and then two years ago I upgraded to a 7D, and started having issues with my RAW files. Namely, that they looked like shit. I did a lot of googling and reading about the problems, which were hard to describe, except that from the LCD preview to Aperture’s RAW rendering, colors were getting mighty fucked up. The consensus seemed to be that this is what happens with RAW files, you have to process them, blah blah blah. So I did a lot of black and white converting and kept getting really frustrated, for two years. Finally, though, I bit the bullet and bought a copy of Lightroom 3, and as soon as I changed the camera profile from Adobe Standard (aka shitty looking RAW file just like Aperture made) to Camera Faithful… mind blown! My pictures look like I want/expect them to! I can’t believe I’ve wasted years screwing around with this when I could’ve been maybe not producing cringe-worthy work. Take these Julia Holter pictures, from her recent show at Le Poisson Rouge (more here on BrooklynVegan). Aperture blows the intense blue lighting. It looks gross. In Lightroom, the colors are preserved/don’t get so funky/can actually be worked with. Honestly, right now I want to go back and re-edit every picture I’ve ever taken with the 7D.
